The Tale of Trebius, the Saimaa Sentinel

About the Trebius fish, which the Swedish historian and Catholic priest Olaus Magnus, who visited Olavinlinna (the City of Savonlinna, Finland), wrote about in his book History of the Northern Peoples back in the Middle Ages, in the year 1555.

With the restoration of the Linnanvirta stream, there is hope that the Trebius fish, Saimaa lake salmon and trout, will return to spawn in the stream.

“Olaus Magnus mentioned in that work that he had seen strange, large black fish in the stream by Olavinlinna and believed they were Trebius fish.”

“Perhaps Magnus had seen salmonids rising to spawn, which indeed turn darker in color during spawning.”

🌊 Connection to Linnanvirta in Front of Olavinlinna

In Savonlinna, the Linnanvirta stream—located between Olavinlinna Castle and Riihisaari Museum—has recently undergone a major restoration project to support native migratory fish like lake trout. In spring 2025, 12,500 juvenile trout were released into the stream, which was reshaped to resemble a natural spawning habitat.
